<![CDATA[The Eagle-Tribune: Obituaries]]> (8)

Salem - In his final hand, Sean James McCarthy drew Aces and Ten's for the blackjack of eternal rest. Over 76 years, he loved deeply, coached passionately, and traveled widely, before passing peacefully at his home in Salem, NH, on Saturday, August 24, 2024. Born a third-generation Lawrencian (MA) on March 29, 1948 to Joseph and Catherine Eileen (Batts) McCarthy, he was the youngest of five children. Growing up on Eutaw Street in Lawrence, he attended the now-closed Assumption School before enrolling in Lawrence High School. In 1964, he met Patricia Corkery and the two spent nearly every day together for the last 60 years. A proud 1966 LHS graduate, Sean was a varsity football (#24) and baseball player. As a committed Lancer, he returned to his alma mater to begin his career as a football and baseball coach. His years as a baseball coach, most of which were at Lawrence High, spanned the course of four decades. He is well remembered and highly regarded by a long list of athletes that he coached and mentored over the years from Lawrence High, Tewksbury Memorial High, and the Greater Lawrence Vocational School. In 1970, Sean and Patricia married — traveling as often as life would allow. A few of their favorite haunts were Las Vegas and Atlantic City, or really anywhere that was in close proximity to a blackjack table and a robust list of live entertainment options. As recently as 2023, Sean and Patty went on their tenth Malt Shop Cruise, once again for the nearby table games and the tantalizing itinerary of aging A-list entertainers. When he wasn't with his wife or three children, Sean could be seen among a wide group of very dear friends playing golf or socializing at the Dewey Club. He enjoyed and thrived on his many profound connections and friendships most of which began many years ago. With his deep ties to the Merrimack Valley, his family and friends were a multitude. Sean was a friend to many and not because he craved popularity — he did not — but because he was a compassionate listener and a truthful responder. Sean dedicated his career to working in the City of Lawrence for over 30 years until his retirement in 2008. He started as a Code Enforcement Inspector for Lawrence Health Department. Sean finished his time in Lawrence, working as the Superintendent of the Bellevue Cemetery where he liked to say, "I have a lot of people under me and not one complaint." Sean was predeceased by his parents and his four siblings: J. Kevin, Dennis, Patricia, and Brian.Sean is survived by his wife, Patricia (Corkery) McCarthy; his three children: Sean McCarthy, Patrick McCarthy, and Mary Ellen Miceli – one of whom was his favorite; and their spouses Nicole Shadeed, Michelle (Maalouf) McCarthy, and Bryan Miceli. Sean adored — and was adored by — his grandchildren: Brayden, Declan, Beckett, Jacqueline, and Zaya.Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Thursday, August 29, 2024 from 4pm to 8pm at the Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third Street, North Andover, MA. A funeral service will be offered on Friday, August 30, 2024 at 11am in the funeral home. For online condolences, please visit www.contefuneralhomes.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sean's name to Lowell Middlesex Academy Charter School in continued support of area youth (67 Middle Street, Lowell; www.lmacs.org), where his son serves as Executive Director.

<![CDATA[The Eagle-Tribune: Obituaries]]> (16)

Zelienople - The family of the forever joyful, hopeful, kind, and loving W. Douglas Halsted, III is sad to announce his passing at 89 on July 6, 2024. He completed his remarkable life peacefully, in the company of loving family members. Douglas is survived by his four children (Shorey, Sarah, Nathan, and Bill) and seven grandchildren, and his sister, Janice Halsted Sussebach and her family.Doug was born in Southampton, New York on July 3rd, 1935, to the delight of his parents Walter Douglas Halsted Jr and Alice Heilig Halsted. Doug was raised first in New York and, as of 1941, in their historic home, the 1816 Jacob Ide parsonage and farmhouse in West Medway, Massachusetts with his two sisters, Janice (born in 1939) and Susan (1946-2001). He shared a deep life-long bond with both of them. By their example, their parents taught the importance of service to the community and the power of supporting the next generation to meet their potential.Doug attended the public schools in Medway, then was admitted to the Phillips Exeter Academy where he was first exposed to the study of foreign languages. His love of choral music got its start in the Exeter glee club. The Exeter community in general left such an impression on Doug that he was a very active alumnus. In the Summer of 1953 Doug's love of the French language and culture reached a significant peak when he attended the Collège Cévenol in the historical town of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, France. He returned to go to Harvard, majoring in romance languages. He received an M.A. at Tufts and went on to study and teach at the University of Kansas. He spent one year at the Ecole Supérieur de Commerce in Clermont-Ferrand, France. During his academic life and travels Doug formed personal friendships, many of which he maintained by correspondence and mutual visits all through his life. He truly lived his love of language. This made him the great teacher he became.Doug formed life-long friendships throughout his journey, be that serving as a camp counselor at North Woods, working alongside his father at the Boy's Club in New York City, attending Philips Exeter, Tufts, Harvard, and University of Kansas, studying French in France, or traveling through Europe.Doug embraced life with love and joy and integrity. Doug was fascinated by how human sevolved to communicate meaning, leading two of his great loves – language and Music. He was delighted by how culture and language interplayed to create changes in meaning and evolve over time. If you were ever wondering about the etymology of a word, Doug definitely knew the answer and it was impossible to play Balderdash with Doug since he already knew the definition of all the words.Doug was able to merge his passion for language and supporting our youth through becoming a French teacher, eventually moving to the Andover School System in the 1980's until his retirement. His fundamental love of music was expressed through him serving as a Tenor in a multitude of choirs throughout his life, including South Church, Lexington Pops, Philips Exeter Choir, and Philips Andover Choir. He also was able to express his commitment to children and the Arts by serving as the Producer of the Andover High School Drama theatrical productions alongside his best friend Bob Lague. If you were wondering where Doug was some evening, he was either at choir or play practice.Bob Lague and his wife Nancy introduced Doug to the great love of his life, Josie Walker, and in 1990 they married and he became part of her family and step-father to her three children, Sarah, Nathan and Shorey. Family and fatherhood were always of paramount importance to Doug, and in 1992 Doug and Josie expanded the love of their family through the adoption of their son Bill. This decision was Doug's proudest commitment and a source of great happiness to him, particularly the three wonderful grandchildren his son and his wife Christen brought to Doug's life, Gabriel, Jacobe Douglas, and Aubrey.Doug loved to learn and enjoyed traveling, especially with his wife Josie. Many cross country road trips, plus journeys to Australia, Europe and The Panama Canal, gave Doug and Josie tremendous happiness and fulfillment. Their favorite place to go, however, was their cottage in New York's Catskill Mountains, where they hosted friends and family together every summer for over 30 years.Doug taught us all how to have a meaningful life and to approach everything with integrity, peace, love, humor, and joy.We welcome you to join us in our Celebration of Life, at South Church in Andover, MA, Saturday September 7 th at 4 p.m., with "Cast Party" to follow.

<![CDATA[The Eagle-Tribune: Obituaries]]> (17)

Salem - All who knew and loved Pauline Estelle (Chalifoux) Gaudette hold this truth to be self-evident, that on August 21, 2024, our Lord God and Savior called Pauline from her loving husband and children at Lawrence General Hospital to immediately seat her at His table in heaven.Pauline was born to the late Arthur and Diana (Desjardins) Chalifoux in Lowell on December 15, 1934, the youngest of six children. She graduated from the St. Louis Academy in Lowell. Just after their 19th birthday, Pauline married Robert P. Gaudette, Sr. at what is now Ste. Marguerite D'Youville Parish in Dracut. It was a marriage that was to last 70 years.Pauline and Robert had eight children together, and Pauline was the glue that bound the family together. She cherished time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and, most especially, her beloved husband, Robert. She also loved animals, both wild and tame, and was an avid bird watcher.Pauline spoke English and Québécois, and immensely enjoyed visiting Québec and Montréal, her ancestral home. She had a wonderful sense of humor: to her, a "good doobie", especially accompanied with a peace sign, described anyone whom she was highly affectionate of.The Bible calls us to "give as decided in your heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." Pauline, a devout French Canadian Roman Catholic, took this to heart; cheerful giving was her life's work.Pauline gave her time, energy, and boundless love to her eight children, always (and constantly) caring for them. She gave her full support to every aspect of her husband's entrepreneurship throughout their married life. Most recently, she was an integral part of Future Supply Corp. of Londonderry, NH, a family business that continues to thrive some 35 years after it was founded. Behind the scenes, she gave her all to ensure the success of her husband's professional choirs. Later in life, she gave generously—and always quietly—to the Church, to charities, to families, and to friends alike. She quite literally gave everything she could.Pauline only knew how to give. And she never expected anything in return. A careful observer might conclude that, in fact, Pauline only knew how to love.In addition to her husband, she is survived by her eight children, Ronald R. Gaudette of Newton, MA, Richard A. Gaudette of Danville, NH, Donna M. Balsamo and her husband Anthony of Salem, NH, Marilyn F. Hillner and her husband, Mark of Salem, NH, Robert P. Gaudette, Jr. and his wife Mary Lou of Brentwood, NH, Edward A. Gaudette and his wife Tammy of Salem, NH, Paula A. Gaudette of Salem, NH, and Laura L. Berry and her husband Michael of Plaistow, NH; 14 grandchildren, Joshua Gaudette, Jeremy Gaudette, Nicholas Balsamo, Sarah duch*emin, Julie Parsons, Allison Hillner, Robert F. Gaudette, Joseph Gaudette, Andrew Gaudette, Jennifer Benson, Emily Gaudette, Stephanie Sullivan, Amanda Berry, and Holly Berry; three great-grandchildren, Nicolette Estelle duch*emin, Kylie Parsons, Owen Sullivan; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Arthur Chalifoux, Edmond Chalifoux, Leon Chalifoux, Diana (Chalifoux) Gagnon, and Yvette Chalifoux.Relatives and friends are invited to attend Pauline's wake at the McKenna-Ouellette Funeral Home 324 Hildreth St, Lowell, on Wednesday, August 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Ste. Margueritte D'Youville Parish in Dracut. Her burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pauline's memory to L'Oratorie Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal, 3800, chemin Queen-Mary, Montréal (Québec), Canada, H3V 1H6 or to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, MSPCA-Angell, Attn: Donations, 350 South Huntington Ave, Boston, MA 02130. Pauline, you were a good doobie. Peace.

<![CDATA[The Eagle-Tribune: Obituaries]]> (20)

Haverhill - Antonios 'Tony' Konstantinos Dimakis was born on February 5, 1933 to Katerina and Konstantinos Dimakis in Chios, Greece. Antonios lived a long, eventful, and hard- yet successful life. When he was only 5-years-old, he and his family split in half during World War II, leaving Tony to spend the next four years as a refugee in Cyprus while they waited out the war. After returning home to Chios, miraculously, the other half of his family was alive and they finally reunited. After the war, he worked with his father to provide for his family as a farmer and a tree pruner. At 16, Tony became the assistant cook on a ship for the Greek Merchant Marines- a job he worked tirelessly and passionately for 20 years. He also served two years in the Greek Navy. He was a dedicated, hardworking man who always provided for his family and loved ones. In between his time in the merchant marines, Antonios worked as a personal chef to the Admiral of the Greek Navy in Athens, where he ultimately met and fell in love with the woman who would become his wife and soulmate, Evdokia Georgine Dimakis. They had 3 boys together, and eventually, Tony moved their family to the United States. Tony bought Mark's Deli in Haverhill, Ma. in 1975, where it still remains in the family today. Mark's Deli became a huge part of the Greek and Haverhill community overall, as Tony was so personable and formed close relationships with everyone who walked through its doors. He and his wife enjoyed giving back to the community they had become a part of after immigrating to the United States. They did so by helping with many occasions at the St. Peter and St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church over the years.Tony's love for cooking never faded, as food is an important part of the Greek culture- he passed this sentiment down to all of his children. He brought a little piece of Chios with him in his cooking. And he never forgot to let his family know he loved them.Antonios is predeceased by his wife, Evdokia Dimakis of Haverhill, MA, his son, Konstantinos Dimakis, and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Dimakis of Haverhill, MA. He leaves behind his son, Nikolaos Dimakis and daughter in-law Maria Dimakis of Taunton, MA, his son Stavros Dimakis of Haverhill, MA, and six grandchildren: Antonios K. Dimakis, Nathan Dimakis, Antonios N. Dimakis, Stavros J. Dimakis, Manoli Dimakis, and Evthokia Dimakis, all of whom he treasured and loved dearly. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Tony passed peacefully on August 22, 2024, at Hannah Duston Nursing Home surrounded by all of his loved ones. The Dimakis family thanks, from the bottom of their hearts, the nurses, physical therapists, and staffs at Whittier Rehab and Hannah Duston, in addition to the Hospice Care Team, who showed their compassion and worked their hardest to help Tony in his times of need.Visitation will be Thursday, August 29, in the Driscoll Funeral Home, 309 S. A jack of all trades is a master of none, oftentimes is better than a master of one. With a love of people and an outgoing personality, Donald loved to cook and prepare food, which he looked forward to sharing with his family and friends. His pasta sauce would rival the best and was always a treat everyone looked forward to. His recipe is not found in any book, but one that he derived from the many times he spent with his grandmother, making her pasta sauce. He always arrived on Christmas day with his sauce in hand.He was always there to help others, and happily came to assist when called upon by family and friends alike. His kindness will be remembered by all knew him. In his free time, Donald was found reading, something he loved to do.In addition to his father Donald R. Bohnwagner, Sr., Donald is survived by his son, Donald R. Bohnwagner, III; his siblings Donna Ashford of Derry, NH, Brian Bohnwagner of Atkinson, NH, Mary Ellen Gioia and her husband David of Hampstead, NH, Richard Bohnwagner of Atkinson, NH, Steven Bohnwagner of Keller, TX, Robert Bohnwagner and his wife Kerri of Sandown, NH; and his nieces and nephews, whom he loved so much.Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Alzheimer's Association at WWW.ALZ.org.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, August 30, 2024, between 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street, Methuen, MA.
