John, here's one in the SF Bay Area. Seems like a good price but I'm no expert.

1975 BMW 2002

I really like 2002s. I had a couple, coincidentally both Sienna Brown (root beer brown metallic) automatics. One was a trade-in from when I was an auto broker in the late 80s. That car was an interesting story. The other I bought off an eBay seller for $3,100 who didn't get his reserve just for fun, as I knew I wouldn't lose money on it. I think they have a unique feel and stick to the road nicely. Love the punky looks (and am in the minority and prefer the '74-'76 looks, except for the bumpers). They're really prone to rust and you could almost say if it's not bubbling now, it will be later. I suspect you could only drive them in dry weather if the car was truly rust-free. For that reason, if you're in Portland, that means you couldn't drive it much without risking rust, IMHO. I'd love to have one, but my target would be one that someone else has spent $50K on that I could buy for $20-30K. I don't think you can make them super nice without getting buried in them. I business acquaintance of mine owns a good independent BMW repair shop in Berkeley, Bavarian Professionals. I think very highly of him and his shop. He said the nicest ones in his opinion are the ones with the small six transplanted in vs the monster M motors. That sounds right to me, but finding one of those is like looking for a unicorn in a haystack.

They are tons of fun. I keep telling folks who missed the boat on long hood 911s that they should buy one before the secret is out (any more than it already is). They aren't conventionally pretty, but they are cute and fun... I'd recommend a "roundie" meaning round tail lights, 73 or earlier !

I've owned a lot of fun cars over the years, but the 2002 is the one constant that is always there. Probably also because I'm upside down in it ;-) It's fun at low speeds, easily modded, not super valuable and therefore carefree, carries 4 adults in comfort, offers superb visibility all around, easy to work on, cheap to maintain, dirt cheap to "mess" with (gearbox swap, engine swap), has a great community of users, and it's unassuming... People smile when they see it. Buy one yesterday. Watch for rust, mechanicals are tertiary to rust.... and rust... They co-invented rust with the Alfa....

Coincidentally, if you are bored, I once wrote a comparo between my 2002 and my new alfa GTV and you are welcome to read it there, at least the bmw bits:

This looks like the same one I posted the S14 engine pic from.

And so I pulled the trigger

And so the slippery slope on this one begins:D Got a 10 footer with bad respray (red) but originally sienna brown evident once you open the hood and trunk. Shock towers, floor, rockers and spare tire panel are solid. Shock absorbers are toast and driver seat and rear seats have tears. Overall, body is solid and electricals and mechanicals are sound.

I decided to get the later 2002 (74) as I cannot imagine cutting the fenders and putting flares and front air dams to a roundie. The things I wanted to do with my 911 but just couldn't do it.

Here she is http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1473349481.jpg

Excuse me for a few minutes, I need some "alone" time.

You are going where I hopefully will go.

Please document your progress.

Well done.

It would definitely be slow but hope it ends well.

1st phase - De-smog, headers and dual side drafts 45
2nd phase - Suspension upgrade, lowering spring, bilstein shocks, sway bars. urethane bushings.
3rd phase - remove hideous bumpers, add flares, front airdam and rear spoilers and maybe E21 seats delete rear seats.
4th phase - paint it back to Sienna brown

5th phase - sell my kidneys to pay for everything and still get to maintain the 911:D

Shaun @ Tru609-08-2016 09:26 AM

Yeah, if I weren't rebuilding the 928 motor, I'd go look at it.

I can't post a link because NatGeo is amazingly fast at pulling down Youtube videos, but there is a show on there called "Car SOS," it's a bit like "Wheeler Dealers" and they just restored a 2002 Turbo. Amazing watch for me since I know nothing about the 2002, or BMW in general.

It's season 3 episode 4 and after having it blasted there was hardly anything left in the way of steel in many places, but they fixed it. Motor was shot as well and they sourced that out I'm guessing because it really needed a specialist for that portion.

Thanks for the updates on your car!

I'm a little bit jelly...

72doug2,2S09-28-2016 09:15 AM

Points went bad in my 02. I bought the electric points upgrade from our host and i'm back in business. It feels like Christmas having this back.

Deschodt09-28-2016 09:29 AM

One day we'll look back at flared 2002s the same way we look at long hoods 911s that were converted to short hoods... It's cool, I get it... But big wheels/tires really kill the way those cars feel.. I've gone back 2 tire sizes down in the 9 years I've owned mine, and reinstalled the stock steering wheel, and it's light and slides again, so much more fun ! ;-)

Y'all should buy one before the run on prices... No need to buy a Tii, a base with some mods will be a hoot !

72doug2,2S09-28-2016 09:48 AM

I don't have first hand knowledge on the tire feel, but I would agree the stock set up is a lot of fun.

Is 74 smog exempt?

Deschodt09-28-2016 12:01 PM

yes 76 is the cutoff... but 73 is the last year of the round tail light, then you get square tail and canoe bumpers (assuming you leave them on)
